Heritage Day provides visitors a glimpse into a simpler
time in Howard County and Maryland. On this fall day in September,
Almira’s Polite Society and others re-enact and interpret
daily life during the early Victorian period leading up to the Civil
War.
For the 2003 Heritage Day, the first Fancy Fair will
be held, a market place for historians. Fancy Fairs were held in
19th century American Victorian communities to raise funds for special
projects, like building a school, roofing a church, or assisting
orphans and widows. Funds from this year’s Fancy Fair will
be used to provide funds for Almira’s Polite Society activities.
