Since 1988 archival and field research have helped
to answer many questions about what the Patapsco Female Institute
was like when it operated as a school as well as during its varied
20th century uses. Through programs offered by the Howard County
Department of Recreation and Parks, the Patapsco Female Institute
Historic Park, and the Upper Patuxent Archaeology Group,(contact
for link) thousands of individuals have visited or worked at this
active archaeological site. This group includes primary and secondary
students from public and private schools in the region, anthropology
and archaeology students from Howard Community College, summer archaeology
campers, and public archaeology participants.
Generous funds from the Columbia Foundation and the
Maryland Humanities Council have further supported these efforts.
To date, over 90,000 artifacts have been unearthed in and around
the grounds of the park. Each item is inventoried and is available
for interpretive use. Sometimes visitors to the park happen to find
an artifact while on the grounds. If so, they are encouraged to
note the location of the object and be sure to turn it in to a staff
member or volunteer.
